1. Cream-water-mixture
Milk in large quantities is not ideal for people with renal failure, as it contains relatively high amounts of potassium and phosphate. However, you can try a cream-water mixture when cooking sauces, pancakes, puddings, etc. This contains much less of both and is therefore healthier for you. Use about 1/3 cream and 2/3 water - you can vary this depending on your needs. More cream makes the consistency thicker, more water makes it runnier. It's a great idea to just make a habit of cooking with it instead of milk!
2. Salt-free spices & reduced salt products
You can get a lot of foods in the grocery store that contain a relatively high amount of salt. Especially with processed products, instant products and spice mixtures, make sure that they do not contain salt or other food additives. Salt-free products can be advantageous as long as they are not being manufactured on a potassium basis.
3. Milk alternatives
A few years ago, milk alternatives tasted like nothing. Now, however, soy milk, rice milk, and oat milk have made huge leaps in flavor - they are much better now. Some taste better, some less - as with all products, you'll have to try it out a bit. Especially when mixed with your coffee, you can hardly taste the difference anymore.
4. Homemade vegetable broth
You never really know what's in vegetable soup cubes. But they're also really easy to make yourself! Throw together freeze-dried veggies in a blender to make a powder. Alternatively, you can use fresh vegetables, cut them into small pieces and dry them in the oven at 80-100 degrees for half a day. After that you can also throw them into the blender. You can then store your vegetable broth either in an airtight jar or in the freezer.
5. Soy and tofu
Products made from soy (milk, yogurt, creams, etc.) are a great alternative to dairy products from cow's milk, because they only contain about a quarter of the phosphate. The best known soy product is probably tofu, which is more or less soy cheese. Tofu is a perfect ingredient for people living with renal failure. Since tofu alone is relatively tasteless, it is best to season tofu with olive oil and a few herbs, making its taste really delicious. You can also add tofu to a mixed salad really easily.
6. Tartar baking powder
Regular baking powder is quite a phosphate bomb. Instead, you can use phosphate-free baking powder for all your baking needs. You can always check with bakeries, too - many organic bakeries now use phosphate-free baking powder. By the way, be careful with tartar baking powder if you're also watching your potassium, as it can contain a relatively high amount of potassium.
